Building A Barden Home

My step by step experience with Barden Homes

Barden Homes = Faster Framing

clock July 21, 2009 10:41 by author Donny Kemick

While I feel that Barden offers many advantages over modular homes and traditional stick-built homes, the biggest so far for me has been the speed in which the house has been framed in and enclosed from the elements.  It has taken 6 working days total (and consecutive, minus 1 weekend) to get the 1st floor, 2nd floor, and roof framed in and sheathed.  We’ve only had one really rainy day, and that was enough to make my stomach turn when I saw water on the floors.  After today, we’ll be fairly dry the rest of the project!

Clearly a stick-built home would sit in the elements much longer before being fairly protected from weather.

What’s To Come This Week?

I’m not certain what all will happen this week, but if I had to guess I would say:

  • Shingling of the Roof
  • Wrap for around the house
  • Windows and Doors

Framing the 1st Floor Walls and 2nd Floor Deck – Day 3

clock July 17, 2009 03:48 by author Donny Kemick

After this post, I will be officially caught up!  That is until this evening, because they are setting the 2nd floor walls as I type this.  Yesterday, they:

  • finished the couple of interior walls that were left,
  • finished some of the 2nd floor-floor joists,
  • covered the exterior of the floor joists around the outside of the house (2nd photo below shows this),
  • laid the entire 2nd floor subfloor

I was skeptical yesterday that they would come today and do the 2nd floor walls because there is a high percentage chance of rain, but they are out back setting walls.  To get updates and photos throughout the day, follow me on twitter.  I will most certainly post a video of the 2nd floor wall progress this evening or tomorrow morning, so check back.

Here’s a small walkthrough of the 1st floor on day 3 of framing as well as some corresponding photos:

Whitaker Corners Tour - Day 2 of Framing the 1st Floor

Because the crew was on site so late on delivery day, I was wondering if they would get to the site a bit lit on Day 2.  Not so!  They were there bright and early to start up where they finished off.  They put in another full day, but there were no delays so they got to leave at their regular finishing time.

On day 2 of framing the 1st floor, they set just about all of the remaining interior walls, and laid the I-joists for the 2nd floor deck (floor).  Hopefully tomorrow they will get the subfloor laid down.

What’s a Post Without A Video and Some Photos

I helped worsen my hard drive space issue by shooting more video and photography on day 2 :).  You can see the photos down the side/below and the video below:
